“‘Being Yourself” Chitra Nikam
The Art
“In this evocative painting titled ‘Being Yourself,’ the artist captures a poignant moment of serene introspection. Four women adorned in traditional Indian attire sit together in calm contemplation, their silence resonating with a profound sense of self-possession. The composition suggests a quiet strength, as if these women have found solace in simply being true to themselves.
The choice of traditional clothing roots the scene in cultural richness, while the absence of conversation allows for an exploration of inner thoughts and individuality. The title, ‘Being Yourself,’ invites viewers to witness this silent gathering as a celebration of authenticity and self-awareness. It prompts contemplation on the beauty found in moments of quietude, where one can embrace their true essence without the need for words. The painting encourages us to appreciate the power of self-reflection and the peaceful strength that comes from being in tune with one’s authentic self.”
The Artist
Chitra Nikam, a luminous artist whose vibrant spirit transcended societal norms, left an indelible mark on the world of art. Hailing from India, she defied conventional roles for women, pursuing her artistic journey at Abhinav Kala Vidyalaya Pune. In 1989, at the age of 35, she held her first solo exhibition, showcasing her courageous pursuit of dreams as a mother of three. Completing her art teacher diploma, Chitra shared her love for creativity as an art teacher, leaving a lasting impact beyond the canvas.
Tragically, Chitra’s journey was cut short by pancreatic cancer, but her legacy lives on through her art. As the first artist in our “Art and the Artist” series at Anahata Bodycare and Cosmetics, we pay homage to Chitra by featuring her mesmerizing paintings on our body wash labels. Each stroke of her brush is a testament to her resilience, and through this series, we celebrate her artistic brilliance and the strength inherent in following one’s passion.
